For our show at the Denton Community Market, me and Jeff split up the vocal duties and sang in harmony on a few songs. Jeff brought in half of the songs, I brought in the rest.
HBB started when I asked Greg and Jeff to come record my versions of “When the Levee Breaks” and “Bo Diddley”. These songs were important to me early in my musical journey. I remember seeing pictures of Bo Diddley in Guitar Player magazine and being fascinated by his look and his rectangle-shaped guitar. Someone showed me the “Bo Diddley” beat.
I used to listen to Led Zeppelin IV and I loved the final track, “When the Levee Breaks”. For a while, around the age of 10, I would fall asleep listening to that album. Later on, I found the Memphis Minnie version.
After I got us a slot at the market, I wrote “At the Market” in about 10 minutes. Me and Jeff put the set list together very quickly too. It spans our interests in jazz, rock & roll, calypso, cumbia, blues, and American folk.
Greg’s inimitable drumming style was essential to making the set work musically.
I am now working on creating a set of gospel music with HBB. I love church music and I think this group will bring something original to these wonderful pieces of music. This is the list I have so far, with my favorite versions of the songs:
What Are They Doing in Heaven Today Washington Phillips
Take Your Burden to the Lord and Leave it There Washington Phillips
Peace in the Valley George Jones
Every Time I Feel the Spirit Leadbelly
Swing Low, Sweet Chariot Leadbelly
They Hung Him on the Cross Leadbelly
The Good Lord The Abyssinians
Satta Massagana The Abyssinians
Eternal Father, Strong to Save (medley with Jaws)
